THE VILLAGE KARLŠTEJN

The village Karlštejn is about 30 km southwest away from Prague. It is situated on the banks of the river Berounka in the protected landscape area Český kras. It has long lived in the castle´s shadow, as it was built in the same time. Its original name, equal to that of the castle, changed in the 15th century in Budy, according to dwellings where aboriginal inhabitants had lived. Since 18th century its name was Budňany. Since 1952 it has been given back its original name Karlštejn.
